Increased Popularity in Background Checks
If you have applied for a job, a loan, or a lease in the past few years there is a good chance you have signed a release allowing someone to conduct a background check. Prior to the recent popularity spike in background checks employers, lenders, and landlords would have to rely on resumes and references to ensure your credibility and reliability. But now with your signature these people can delve into your entire past to review everything that has occurred in your academic, military, career, criminal, and sometimes even personal life.
The popularity in background checks has risen for multiple reasons in the past decade. One main reason is that many applicants have begun providing a great deal of false information on their resumes – background checks are a way to verify the accuracy. Federal laws have also began requiring that any organizations that work with children, the elderly, or the disabled conduct background checks on all applicants for safety reasons. The September 11, 2001 attacks have also increased security measures across the board, including in hiring procedures. One final reason that background checks are being conducted more frequently is because companies have seen a spike in negligent hiring lawsuits, where the company is sued because one employee harms another.
While most of these reasons for background checks are pertaining to employment there are other reasons that companies are conducting these background checks. Generally background checks are completed for the safety of the company and to ensure that they are dealing with reputable people. Some may think that background checks are invasive but they are an excellent security measure for any company.
So the next time you think about hiring a new employee, renting out your basement apartment, or finding a new babysitter for your children consider conducting a background check on all of the applicants first. This will help you determine which applicant is best suited for your needs. Background checks are a quick and easy way to ensure that you are working with someone who you are able to trust. And if you are the person signing the consent form just remember the person conducting a background check is not trying to be invasive but rather protect their company or investment.
